The Technology
Solar panels (photovoltaic / PV) convert sunlight into electricity. The electricity generated is direct current (DC), and an inverter converts it to alternating current (AC) for use in your home. A complete system has five key components:
Capture sunlight and generate DC electricity for your home.
Converts DC electricity into usable AC power for household appliances.
Measures the amount of electricity produced by your solar system.
Stores excess solar energy for use during evenings or periods of low sunlight.
Records electricity imported from and exported back to the grid for Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) payments.

30–50%
of the solar electricity a typical home generates is used without a battery — the rest is exported to the grid.
70–90%
of your own solar electricity used — store daytime excess and use it in the evening when generation stops.
A battery stores the excess electricity your panels generate during the day so you can use it in the evening, dramatically increasing how much of your own renewable energy you actually use. Indicative battery costs:
| Battery Size | Indicative Cost | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 3kWh | £2,500 – £3,500 | Small homes, low usage |
| 5kWh | £4,000 – £5,500 | Typical 3-bed semi |
| 8kWh | £6,000 – £8,000 | High usage, electric car |
| 10kWh | £7,500 – £10,000 | Large homes, off-grid aspiration |
Typical estimated annual saving with a battery: £300 – £600 in addition to your solar savings, with an indicative payback period of 5–8 years. All figures are indicative estimates and vary by property and usage.

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) requires energy suppliers to pay you for electricity you export to the grid. Example tariffs are shown below — rates change frequently and vary by supplier, so always check current rates before choosing a tariff.
| Example Tariff | Typical Rate | Indicative Annual Earnings (4kW system) |
|---|---|---|
| Octopus Outgoing | 15p/kWh | £250 – £400 |
| EON Next Export | 10p/kWh | £170 – £270 |
| British Gas Export | 5p/kWh | £85 – £135 |
Tariffs listed are independent market examples for illustration only — LAMTANS is not affiliated with any energy supplier. Rates shown are indicative and subject to change; earnings estimates depend on your system size and export volume.
A note on MCS: LAMTANS Engineering is currently pending MCS accreditation and proactively installs to MCS standards in the meantime. Because SEG eligibility normally requires MCS-certified (or equivalent) installation, we will discuss your SEG eligibility route openly during your free survey, and we help you complete SEG registration after installation.
Step by Step
The solar panel installation process follows a structured approach from initial consultation and site assessment through to system design, installation, commissioning and SEG registration — ensuring your solar system is installed safely and performs efficiently.
We discuss your energy usage, goals and roof orientation to understand what solar can do for your home.
We check roof condition, shading and structural integrity to confirm your property is suitable.
We design the optimal panel layout and system specification for your roof and usage patterns.
You receive a clear written quote and MCS-standards documentation before any work begins.
Panels, inverter and optional battery installed by our team, typically over 1–3 days. Correct mounting, weatherproofing and electrical work at this stage determine your system's long-term safety and performance.
We test the complete system and show you how to monitor your generation and usage.
We help you apply for Smart Export Guarantee payments so you can start earning from exported electricity.
We handle building control notification for you — you don't need to manage any of the paperwork.
Suitability Check
Before installing solar panels, it is important to check your roof orientation, condition, shading and property suitability to ensure your system can generate maximum energy.
Our honest promise: we assess your property during the free survey and tell you honestly whether solar is right for you — if it isn't, we'll say so.
Funding Support
UK funding schemes change frequently, and support is never guaranteed. Depending on your circumstances, partial funding may be available if you are eligible — and you may need to pay a top-up contribution towards the total cost. Here's how the current schemes relate to solar and battery storage:
| Scheme | Covers Solar? | Covers Battery? |
|---|---|---|
| ECO4 | In some cases, if eligible (typically electric heating / low EPC rating) — partial funding may be available | No |
| Warm Homes Plan | Expected — details to be confirmed | Expected — details to be confirmed |
| BUS Scheme | No | No |
| VAT Relief | 0% VAT on solar installation | 0% VAT on battery storage |
Scheme availability and criteria change over time and eligibility is assessed case by case. Funding may be partial rather than full, and a top-up contribution may be required. We'll confirm what may apply to you during your free survey.

Yes. Solar panels still generate electricity on cloudy days because they use daylight rather than requiring direct sunshine. While output may be lower compared with bright sunny conditions, UK solar systems can still produce useful energy throughout the year.
A typical 4kW system has a typical estimated annual saving of £465–£585 on electricity bills. Adding battery storage can bring the combined typical estimated saving to £700–£1,000 per year. Actual savings depend on your usage patterns, roof orientation and energy prices — your free survey provides figures specific to your home.
An indicative payback period is 7–10 years for panels alone, depending on system size, usage and energy prices. Panels typically last 25+ years, so you could benefit from many years of low-cost electricity after the payback point.
Yes, in many cases — particularly if you are out during the day, because a battery stores your excess daytime generation for use in the evening. It's also worth considering if you want maximum energy independence. We'll advise honestly on whether a battery makes sense for your usage during your free survey.
ECO4 may provide partial funding towards solar panels in some cases — typically homes with electric heating or a low EPC rating — if you are eligible. Funding is not guaranteed, and you may need to pay a top-up contribution. Contact us for a free, no-obligation grant eligibility check.
