Why Insulate

Why Loft Insulation Is Essential for Your Home

A quarter of heat lost from a typical home escapes through the roof. Loft insulation is one of the most cost-effective energy efficiency measures available — delivering significant savings on energy bills, a fast payback period, and potential grant funding for eligible households.

🌡️

Reduce Heat Loss by Up to 25%

The roof is the single largest route of heat loss in an uninsulated home. Loft insulation installed to the correct depth dramatically reduces heat escaping upwards — making your home warmer and easier to heat.

💷

Lower Energy Bills

Less heat escaping means less energy needed to keep your home warm — and a direct reduction in your heating bills. Well-installed loft insulation pays for itself quickly, making it one of the best-value home improvements available.

Typical saving: £300–£400/yr
📅

Fast Payback Period

At typical energy prices and savings, professionally installed loft insulation has a payback period of less than two years — even without grant funding. With ECO4 or Warm Homes Plan support, eligible households pay nothing at all.

Payback: under 2 years
🏛️

Grant Funding Available

Loft insulation is one of the most commonly funded measures under both ECO4 and the Warm Homes Plan. Eligible households can have loft insulation installed at no cost — we check your eligibility and manage the application for you.

LAMTANS Engineering is a TrustMark Registered, RECC Accredited, and PAS2035 Compliant loft insulation installer serving Manchester, Greater Manchester, and homes across the UK. We combine professional installation with free grant eligibility checks and a thorough survey process on every job.

01 — Types

Types of Loft Insulation

The right type of loft insulation depends on your property, access, and whether you want to use the loft for storage. We survey your loft first to confirm the most suitable product and installation method.

Blown Insulation (Loose Fill)

Hard-to-Reach Lofts

Loose fibres blown into the loft space using specialist equipment — ideal for irregular or hard-to-reach loft areas where laying blanket rolls is difficult. Requires professional installation for even distribution.

Best for Awkward loft layouts, limited access
Installation Professional installation required
ECO4 eligible Yes, where specified
Indicative cost £500 – £1,000 installed

Insulation Boards (Rigid Foam)

Loft Conversions & Storage

High-performance rigid insulation boards used where blanket or loose fill is unsuitable — including loft conversions, storage areas, or where a clean boarded finish is required. Professional installation for an airtight finish.

Best for Loft conversions, storage lofts
Performance High — thinner profile, better U-value
ECO4 eligible Confirm at survey
Indicative cost £800 – £1,500 installed

Not sure which type is right for your loft? We check loft access, joist depth, existing insulation, and ventilation at the free survey — then confirm the correct product, depth, and specification before any work begins.

03 — Installation Process

Loft Insulation Installation Process

Our process runs from free survey through to final sign-off in a single managed sequence — including grant eligibility check as standard, with no missed steps and minimal disruption.

1

Free Survey

We check loft access, joist depth, ventilation, and the condition of any existing insulation — confirming the correct type, depth, and specification before any work is agreed.

2

Quote & Grant Eligibility Check

We provide a fixed-price quote and confirm whether you qualify for ECO4 or Warm Homes Plan grant funding — potentially reducing your cost to £0. No obligation to proceed.

3

Prepare the Loft

Any stored items need to be moved to clear the loft floor for installation. We can assist with moving items to one side where needed — let us know at the survey.

4

Install Insulation

We install insulation between the joists (typically 100mm) and lay a second layer over the joists at 90° (typically 170mm) — achieving the recommended 270mm total depth for optimal thermal performance.

5

Board Over (Optional)

If you want to continue using the loft for storage, we can install raised loft boards over the insulation to create a walkable storage platform — keeping your insulation depth intact without sacrificing the space.

6

Final Check & Sign-Off

We inspect the completed installation — checking coverage, ventilation, and pipe/tank lagging — and provide the relevant compliance documentation. The installation is handed over complete and signed off.

1 Day

A typical loft insulation installation in a 3-bed semi is completed in a single day. You can remain in your home throughout — work is confined to the loft space with no disruption to your living areas.

06 — FAQ

Loft Insulation — Common Questions

How much can loft insulation save on energy bills?

A properly insulated loft can reduce heat loss through the roof by up to 25%, with typical annual energy savings in the range of £300–£400 for a standard UK home. Actual savings depend on property size, heating system, current insulation levels, and how you heat your home. Without grant funding, loft insulation typically pays back within two years — after which the savings are ongoing with no additional cost.

Can I get free loft insulation?

Yes — if your household qualifies under the ECO4 scheme or the Warm Homes Plan, the full cost of loft insulation may be covered at no charge to you. ECO4 is available to households receiving qualifying benefits (such as Universal Credit or Pension Credit), those with a low EPC rating (band D to G), or those within local authority flex income thresholds. We check your eligibility free of charge with no commitment required. Check your eligibility here →

How long does loft insulation last?

Mineral wool loft insulation has an expected lifespan of 40 years or more when installed correctly. It requires no ongoing maintenance and does not degrade significantly over time when kept dry and undisturbed. A correctly specified and properly installed loft insulation system should continue to perform for the lifetime of the property with no further intervention.

Will loft insulation cause condensation or damp?

Not when installed correctly. One of the key checks in our free survey is ventilation — loft spaces require adequate airflow at eaves level to prevent condensation build-up. We also check the condition of any existing insulation and fit vapour control layers where needed. PAS2035 compliance means every installation is assessed and specified before work begins, ensuring the right product is used in the right way for your specific property.

Can I still use my loft for storage after insulation?

Yes. We can install raised loft boards over the insulation to create a usable storage platform — this preserves the full insulation depth (270mm) without sacrificing storage space. Standard boarding directly on top of insulation compresses it and reduces its effectiveness, which is why raised loft boards are the correct solution. Boarding is an optional addition and can be quoted at the same time as the insulation installation.

What accreditations does LAMTANS hold for loft insulation?

LAMTANS holds TrustMark registration (the government-endorsed quality mark required for ECO4-funded installations), RECC accreditation (Renewable Energy Consumer Code), and installs to PAS2035 — the current UK retrofit standard. We are also ECO4 approved, meaning we can manage the grant application and funded installation process on your behalf from start to finish. View all our accreditations →
