01 — Why Battery Storage

Why Add Battery Storage to Your Solar System?

If you already have solar panels — or are planning to install them — adding battery storage allows you to store the excess electricity generated during the day for use in the evening when solar generation stops. Without a battery, that surplus energy is exported to the grid at a lower rate. With one, you use more of the electricity you generate yourself.

Without Battery Storage
30–50%

Typical homes use only 30–50% of the solar electricity they generate. The rest is exported to the grid — often at rates far below what you pay to import.

With Battery Storage
70–90%

A well-sized battery raises self-consumption to 70–90%. You use more of your own electricity and buy significantly less from the grid.

02 — Key Benefits

Benefits of Battery Storage

Battery storage helps homeowners maximise solar energy use, reduce electricity bills, and gain greater independence from the grid.

Use More of Your Solar

Increase self-consumption from 30–50% to 70–90% — so your solar investment works harder.

💷
Lower Electricity Bills

Save £300–£600 per year on top of your existing solar savings by buying less from the grid.

🔌
Energy Independence

Reduce your reliance on the national electricity grid and protect yourself against rising energy prices.

🛡️
Backup During Power Cuts

Backup-ready batteries keep essential appliances running during a power cut (requires a backup-capable unit).

🕐
Time-of-Use Savings

Charge your battery from the grid at cheap overnight rates (e.g. 7.5p/kWh) and use it during expensive peak periods.

🌿
Reduce Carbon Footprint

Maximise your use of clean renewable energy and reduce the carbon footprint of your household.

03 — How It Works

How Does Battery Storage Work?

Battery storage operates automatically throughout the day — charging when your solar panels produce more electricity than your home needs, then supplying power when generation stops. Some batteries also support overnight grid charging at cheap off-peak rates.

☀️
Daytime
Solar generating

Solar panels generate electricity. Your home uses what it needs instantly. Excess electricity automatically charges the battery rather than being exported to the grid at a lower rate.

🌙
Evening & Night
Solar stopped

When solar generation stops, your home automatically draws electricity from the battery — avoiding expensive grid electricity until the battery is depleted.

Overnight
Optional — tariff users

If you have a time-of-use tariff (e.g. Octopus Intelligent Go at 7.5p/kWh overnight), you can charge your battery from the grid at cheap off-peak rates and use that stored electricity during peak periods at 30p/kWh — saving up to £600/yr.

04 — System Types

Types of Battery Storage Systems

Battery storage systems connect to your solar setup in two ways — AC-coupled or DC-coupled — each suited to different situations. The right choice depends on whether you already have solar panels or are installing everything together.

Type Connection Best For Efficiency Typical Cost (5kWh)
AC-Coupled BatteryRetrofit After solar inverter (AC side) Existing solar systems 90–95% £4,000 – £6,000
DC-Coupled BatteryNew Install Before inverter (DC side) New solar installations 95–98% £4,000 – £5,500

AC-coupled systems can be added to any existing solar installation. DC-coupled systems are slightly more efficient and are typically installed alongside new solar panels. LAMTANS designs the right system for your setup at the free survey.

05 — Costs

Battery Storage Costs in UK 2026

Battery storage systems typically cost between £2,500 and £10,000 depending on capacity. A larger battery stores more energy and delivers better long-term savings — the right size depends on your energy usage and solar system output.

3kWh £2,500 – £3,500

Small homes, lower electricity usage

Save £150–£250/yr
5kWh £4,000 – £5,500

Typical 3-bed semi — most popular size

Save £300–£500/yr
8kWh £6,000 – £8,000

Higher usage, electric vehicle charging

Save £450–£700/yr
10kWh £7,500 – £10,000

Large homes, off-grid aspiration

Save £550–£800/yr

07 — Time-of-Use Tariffs

Time-of-Use Tariffs for Battery Storage

If you have a time-of-use electricity tariff, you can charge your battery from the grid overnight at cheap off-peak rates — then use that stored electricity during expensive peak hours. This works with or without solar panels and can add £300–£600 per year in additional savings.

Tariff Overnight Rate Peak Rate Typical Annual Saving
Octopus Intelligent Go 7.5p/kWh 30p/kWh £400 – £600/yr
Octopus Go 9p/kWh 30p/kWh £350 – £500/yr
EON Next Drive 9.5p/kWh 30p/kWh £300 – £450/yr

Tariff rates and savings are indicative estimates. Actual rates change over time — check with your energy supplier for current pricing. Annual saving figures assume a 5kWh battery with regular overnight charging.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How much does battery storage cost? +

Battery storage costs depend on capacity: 3kWh systems typically cost £2,500–£3,500; 5kWh (the most popular size for a 3-bed home) cost £4,000–£5,500; 8kWh systems cost £6,000–£8,000; and 10kWh systems cost £7,500–£10,000. All prices include installation. Battery storage is zero-rated for VAT (0%).

  • Is battery storage worth it? +

For most homes with solar panels, yes. A battery raises your solar self-consumption from 30–50% to 70–90%, adds £300–£600 per year in additional savings, and typically pays back within 5–8 years. The 10–12 year warranty means you come out well ahead over the battery's lifetime.

  • How long does a battery last? +

Most home battery storage systems carry a 10–12 year manufacturer warranty. After that period, the battery will have degraded slightly in capacity but will typically continue to function. The warranty period alone exceeds the payback period for most installations, meaning you will be in profit before the warranty expires.

  • Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels? +

Yes. We install AC-coupled battery systems that work with any existing solar installation, regardless of the age or brand of your current inverter. AC coupling is slightly less efficient than DC coupling (90–95% vs 95–98%), but is the standard and cost-effective retrofit solution for existing solar customers.

  • Can a battery power my home during a power cut? +

Only if you choose a battery with backup capability. Standard battery storage systems shut down automatically during a grid power cut for safety reasons. Backup-ready batteries (sometimes called islanding or blackout-protection batteries) are available and can keep essential appliances running during an outage. We advise on backup options at the free survey.

  • What accreditations does LAMTANS hold for battery storage? +

LAMTANS Engineering is TrustMark Registered, RECC Accredited, and PAS2035 aligned — along with a range of further industry accreditations. We are Fully Industry Accredited for the retrofit and renewable energy work we carry out. We follow MCS installation standards proactively across all battery storage and renewable energy installations. Our full accreditations list is available on our accreditations page.
