We check existing floor construction, current floor height, existing DPM provision, damp levels, drainage, and access. We confirm insulation specification, screed type, and final floor covering compatibility — then provide a fixed-price quote. No charge, no obligation.
All furniture removed from the room. Existing floor covering — carpet, tiles, LVT, timber — lifted and removed. Skirting boards removed where required to allow for the increased floor height.
The existing concrete slab is cleaned, levelled, and repaired. Cracks, holes, and uneven areas are made good to provide a sound, stable surface for the DPM and insulation. This step is critical for a flat, level final floor.
A continuous damp proof membrane is laid across the full floor area before any insulation is installed. The DPM prevents ground moisture rising through the slab and into the floor assembly — a critical step that protects the insulation, screed, and final floor covering from moisture damage for the life of the installation. The DPM is lapped up the walls and taped at all joints. Omitting or incorrectly installing the DPM is the most common cause of long-term failure in solid floor insulation.
PIR insulation boards (50–100mm) are laid over the DPM across the full floor area. Boards are butted tightly together and staggered at joints to eliminate cold bridges. The insulation thickness is confirmed at survey to achieve the required U-value and to manage final floor height.
A screed layer (50–75mm) is installed over the insulation boards to provide a smooth, load-bearing surface for the final floor covering. Liquid (flowing) screed or traditional sand and cement screed — confirmed at survey based on room size, underfloor heating requirements, and timeline.
Screed requires drying time before the final floor covering can be installed: sand and cement screed typically 1 day per mm thickness (up to 7 days for 75mm); liquid screed typically 24–48 hours walking strength, 4–6 weeks before final floor covering. Drying time is planned into the programme to avoid disruption to your schedule.
Final floor covering installed over the dried screed — carpet, engineered wood, LVT, or tiles as agreed. Skirting boards replaced (deeper where required to account for increased floor height). Doors adjusted if needed. Room handed over complete and ready to use.

A correctly installed solid floor insulation system has a typical lifespan of 30+ years — effectively the life of the building. PIR insulation boards do not degrade significantly when installed in a correctly specified floor assembly with an appropriate damp proof membrane. The screed and floor covering above can be replaced or refreshed as required without affecting insulation performance.
Yes — solid floor insulation typically raises the finished floor level by 100–150mm (insulation boards plus screed). This may require adjustments to internal doors (trimmed at the base), skirting boards (replaced with new), and in some cases kitchen units or fitted furniture. We discuss and plan all floor height implications at the free survey — confirming the insulation thickness, final floor height, and any joinery adjustments required.
For individual rooms, you do not need to move out — you can continue living in the rest of the property while work takes place in the specific room. The room being worked on will be out of use for 3–7 days including screed drying time.
For a whole ground floor programme, you may prefer to stay elsewhere for 1–2 weeks while the screed dries across all rooms — particularly if the kitchen or main living area is being insulated. We discuss programme phasing at the free survey to minimise disruption.
A solid concrete floor will feel completely rigid underfoot — no bounce or flex when you walk across it. It will not feel hollow if you knock on it. Most homes built after 1960 have solid concrete ground floors, as do the majority of single-storey extensions regardless of build date.
