ECO4 Scheme

The ECO4 scheme concludes the UK Government multi-stage effort to enhance energy efficiency in low-income households. Replacing the previous version in April 2022, it expands improvements to more UK homes. Explore the benefits of the ECO4 Funding through LAMTANS Engineering.

What Is The ECO 4 Scheme?

ECO4 Funding, also known as the Energy Company Obligation, is a government initiative in Great Britain designed to address fuel poverty and reduce carbon emissions through energy efficiency measures. The scheme includes the Home Heating Cost Reduction Obligation (HHCRO), also known as the ‘Affordable Warmth’ scheme.

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme aims to improve the energy efficiency of households in the UK, particularly those experiencing fuel poverty. Managed by Ofgem and funded by large energy suppliers, the ECO4 scheme provides financial assistance for energy efficiency measures in households with low energy performance, falling within band D or below on the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) scale.

Eligible households may receive upgrades such as

While this list is not exhaustive, additional measures may be available for specific properties.

How ECO Works:

Under ECO, medium and larger energy suppliers finance the installation of energy efficiency measures in British households. Each obligated supplier has a target based on its share of the domestic energy market in Britain. These suppliers collaborate with installers to introduce specific efficiency measures into homes, such as insulation for lofts, floors, or walls, as well as heating measures.

Understanding the Obligation:

The Home Heating Cost Reduction Obligation (HHCRO) mandates energy suppliers to promote the installation of measures that lead to financial savings on energy bills. This includes the installation of insulation and heating measures.

Eligibility:

If you own and live in your own home or reside in private rented accommodation, you are eligible for ECO funding.

Where does the money come from?

Funding for your Home Energy Improvements is paid for by the Leading Energy Companies such as British Gas, SSE, Scottish Power, N-Power and so on. They have a quota to fill for improving the energy performance of UK Homes and can face large fines if they miss their targets. The aim is to reduce how much fuel UK households use on average. To improve this they aim to make generating heat cheaper (with new boilers), and maintaining heat easier (with insulation).

The money for these improvements comes from the profits of companies everyone is contributing to monthly, in our energy bills. It doesn’t come from the Government the same way that things like Universal Credit does.
